Monet: my decentralized alternative to Instagram

Monet

Instagram was practical. Also annoying. Algorithm, ads, data flow to Meta. I use GrapheneOS and care about privacy on the phone. Next step: something that does not run like an attention shop.

Monet

Monet uses the AT protocol, known from Bluesky. Decentralized, no single company turning the feed. No ads in the Meta sense. You pick feeds, not the other way around.

Open source helps trust. Not because open source is automatically secure. Because you can look.

What changes

Less doomscroll. No reel chain holding you for two hours. Interactions feel smaller, directer. Enough for me.

Data stays closer to you. No profile built only for ad targeting.

What is missing

Reach. People you know are still on Instagram. Monet grows, but slowly. If you only want likes, you stay where the crowd is.

Practice

Create an account, pick feeds, tell contacts. Parallel use is possible, but half-hearted helps little. Instagram is no longer my main channel.

Monet is not magic. It is a different contract between platform and user. For me it fits better.
